Dear parents and students, |
In the blink of an eye, the first “Principal’s Message” of the 2025-2026 academic year marks my 85th entry, signifying my eighth year at LTY. This year’s Open Day was held on Saturday, 20th September. Initially, we were quite concerned as a typhoon was approaching, threatening cancellation. Fortunately, the Observatory did not raise a higher typhoon signal, allowing the Open Day to proceed smoothly. Despite unstable weather and occasional heavy rain, the enthusiasm of participants remained undampened. Every year, the Open Day sees many students, parents, and alumni returning to support and assist. Teachers organized various activities in groups, such as booth games, sports experiences, art and craft workshops, AI photo creation, and Henna hand-painting. Participants who completed designated activities and collected stamps could try their luck at the newly introduced claw machine, “‘Claw’ Tak Hey.” The lively queues showed just how popular it was.

The school briefing session was equally well-received, and I was particularly pleased to see parents actively asking questions, some quite candid, such as: “Will you leave for another school, Principal?”, “When will you retire?”, “Why is the school called a ‘Treasure School’?”, and “Will there be insufficient student enrollment?” Perhaps these questions were sharp, I greatly appreciated them, as they reflected parents’ serious consideration of enrolling their children here. I responded candidly: this is my eighth year at LTY, and I have deep affection for this place with no intention of leaving. I hope to continue contributing to students and parents, offering a distinctive educational choice in Tuen Mun. Though my hair may be thinning, it doesn’t mean I’m old. Retirement is still some time away, so please rest assured. Moreover, our school has a robust knowledge management system and a clear administrative structure, overseen by the Incorporated Management Committee. Our sponsoring body operates one secondary school, two primary schools, and one kindergarten—a considerable scale. Even when I eventually retire, a suitable successor will surely take over, ensuring the school’s continued development and service to students with diverse learning needs.

In fact, since taking up my role in 2018, I’ve gradually come to understand the term “treasure school,” though its true meaning remains unclear to me. I find this label quite unfair, as it deters some parents and students who never visit or learn about the school’s true nature. Every year, alumni and parents return to express gratitude for the school’s nurturing of their children, with graduates jokingly “complaining” that the school is becoming more beautiful and offering more activities. Each year, we have 12 to 16 non-Chinese students who perform excellently and enhance the English-speaking atmosphere on school. Despite a significant drop in student numbers across Hong Kong due to declining birth rates and fewer cross-border students, we have managed steady development, thanks to parents diligently seeking suitable schools for their children. We firmly believe every student has unique potential and the right to education, thriving in a caring environment to develop their strengths. The world shines because of diverse talents, and everyone can excel in different roles. I sincerely believe our school is home to “treasure” students with qualities of loyalty, righteousness, kindness, and courage. With excellent hardware and software, spacious and well-ventilated facilities, our school is among the best in Tuen Mun for campus environment, also helping reduce the risk of infectious diseases.

Regarding enrollment, we understand the challenges posed by low birth rates, dispersed student sources from new housing estates, and fewer cross-border students. The situation is indeed tough, but we remain confident. Through proactive promotion, continuous improvement of school facilities, and opening our campus for firsthand experiences, our school has built a solid reputation in the education sector. We frequently collaborate with the University of Hong Kong, the Education University of Hong Kong, various theater groups, and the Education Bureau on curriculum development and external sharing, earning recognition multiple times. The Education Bureau has also provided funding for school maintenance, enabling us to meet modern educational needs and provide a safe, aesthetically pleasing learning environment. As a result, application numbers have stabilized in recent years. I firmly believe that with the completion of new housing estates in Tuen Mun, student numbers will steadily rise. We believe every student has unique abilities, and in today’s tech-driven world, schools should encourage students to step out of the classroom, apply their knowledge, engage with the world, and gain rich, engaging learning experiences—this is the future of education.

The first day of school this year was Monday, 1st September. Students returned early in the morning, and I greeted them at the school gate, taking photos together. They were full of energy, with many wearing new school uniforms, exuding confidence. I recall one afternoon dining at a mall, overhearing passersby praising our school uniform’s well-coordinated colors. The staff of the lunch supplier also praised the school uniforms for looking vibrant and spirited. Which boost student confidence and are easy to maintain, earning widespread approval.

On Tuesday, 2nd September, the school arranged the first outdoor activity of the academic year—a trip to Tuen Mun Town Centre to watch a movie. Originally planned as a post-exam activity last year, it was postponed due to a typhoon, but the cinema kindly accommodated the rescheduling. Students were deeply engaged during the movie, and upon returning, we organized follow-up activities to guide them in reflecting on the values and attitudes conveyed by the film. Knowledge can be taught, but attitudes must be nurtured. LTY students’ character and qualities have always been admirable, though there’s still room for growth.

On Monday, 15th September, Primary 1 students had their first lunch at school. They adapted quickly, behaved well, and enjoyed their meals together. Perhaps due to the orientation week in late August, where they learned the rules, this year’s Primary 1 students are lively, adorable, and orderly. The new academic year also brought a fresh look to the school: the art room and resource room now feature new cabinets with unique color schemes, adding style; main doors have been upgraded to glass doors for safety and a brighter appearance. A rest corner was added on the ground floor, previously just carpeted with toys and cushions, now equipped with a frame and shoe cabinets, allowing students to remove shoes and relax, read, chat, or even nap with stuffed toys. A large whiteboard was installed on the wall for free expression, and matching benches were added in front of the large notice board for resting. The most popular addition among students and parents is undoubtedly the “‘Claw’ Tak Hey” claw machine. Currently operating as part of a reward program, it encourages students to do good deeds and collect stickers for game chances, receiving enthusiastic responses and positively motivating students.

On Monday, 29th September, students from Primary 4 to 6 visited the Hong Kong History Museum in Tsim Sha Tsui to attend the exhibition titled "United in Arms, Standing for Peace –– 80th Anniversary of Chinese Victory in the War of Resistance Exhibition" The exhibition features some 183 pieces of War of Resistance relics on loan from the National Museum of China, local cultural institutions and museums, and private collectors, supplemented by the Museum’s collections and other historical photos and videos. The exhibition illustrates the beginning, development and end of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the role of the Communist Party of China as the mainstay during the War of Resistance, the vital role of Hong Kong in the national campaign This heroic story shows a nation united in indignation against the enemy and determined to resist the aggressors, making a significant contribution to ending the war and maintaining peace.

As the saying goes, “A good start is half the battle.” With September’s activities kicking off smoothly, I am confident that LTY’s development will only get better!
